"Black or White" and Multicolor
I choose to talk about Micheal
Jackson’s song “Black or White” because in my opinion
it’s a good way to illustrate multiculturalism for several reasons.
On one hand, Micheal Jackson
by himself can represent multiculturalism because of his appearance. He has
been a black and white man in the same life. The King of Pop can be all the
cultures in the same time. He stood for equality, was open-minded and
above cultures. We can’t define him by a “race”.
On another hand, “Black
or White” song is the perfect example to show he defended global
culture through the video and in lyrics. Indeed, during the video clip, we
travel all around the world and all roots are represented. We see all cultures
gathered in one and unique video as Africans, Lebaneses, native Americans,
Russians, Indians…. Moreover, his refrain is “But, if you're
thinkin' about my baby, it don't matter if you're Black Or White” that shows he didn’t make difference between
roots which are all on the same level.
For the last minutes of his clip, Micheal Jackson also choose to put himself on top of Statue of Liberty. I guess this part is not fortuitous because Statue of Liberty is not just an important symbol of his country like every other ones of each country as Eiffel tower, Kremlin, Sphynx, Mosque, Taj Mahal... but it's also meant to welcome people from all over the world who're coming to the USA. Thereby, this sequence stresses on the idea that the King of Pop mights represent all cultures. He’s none and all of them in the same time.
All things considered, the
idea of a global culture behind this video is also illustrated by the
transition of several faces from all horizons which seem to be all the same. We
don’t make a big difference between the first and the next person.
This is one of the best songs of all time! Thanks for posting it!
