The Olympics Games support the idea of Globalization
When Globalization is well-known through the example of the Americanization of the world thanks to MacDonald’s, or Disneyland’s theme-parks to name but
two, there is a special event that only occurred every four years with millions
of spectators all around the
globe watching in awe their well-trained athletes winning or
losing sports competition; the Olympics Game. From my perspective, the Olympics are
an almost perfect
example of globalization at its best.
Indeed the Olympic Games represent peace,
respect, fraternity between nations, but also high-level sport, and unity around the world. In 2012 the London Olympics
Summer-Game gather together over 4.8 billions (huge number considering that is over half the world’s population) of TV- viewers all around the world watching this
major sportive and cultural event.
Once television became widespread, sporting events became accessible to
everyone, at almost any time and all over the world, which comfort this whole idea of
globalization. Connecting people together is important for the Olympics,
undeniably knowing that sports remains a means of asserting and preserving
national identity through every cultural symbols, and values the athletes are
going to show the world during two weeks for the most of them. The Olympics
Games became a major global event due to support from transnational
media corporations, large
multinational companies, intergovernmental organizations (United Nations, the
European Union) who are
the main drivers of globalization.
The exposure of the Olympics makes
them an ideal target for
marketing and economic gain.
With for example new sports arenas, creation of the Olympic villages, and infrastructure
projects, (transport, security,
tourism, utilities, etc.) change
totally the face of a city.
