festivals, more seen today like multicultural events?

A festival is a festive event, organized every year at the same time, about an activity which can be linked to arts, hobbies, shows, but mostly music (in France, there are about 1.400 music festivals by year).
Some people think that the first music festival was Woodstock, created in 1969, but in reality, it was in the United States in the 1950s that they started to look like what we know better today.

Before Woodstock, the Newport Jazz Festival already existed since 1954. Among the guests, Louis Armstrong and Led Zeppelin were already a part of the program. Then, a few years later, the Newport Folk Festival received Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. It was only from the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 that the "rock" aspect appeared, with Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin ...
From there, Woodstock was able to prevail in 1969 with its 500.000 visitors and all its artistic and democratic symbolism.

Step by step, festivals have become popular and incredibly numerous until they become current all over the world. But the original aspect of the old festivals is what still seems fascinating today.
It is understandable: between the sexual revolution by the affirmation of the equality of the sexes and the emancipation of the woman, the carelessness...

The slogans and the messages that spread were « peace and love » and « make love not war ». Today these messages always resonate, but overall what young people really want is to live it and not just to write it on panels.

For everyone, festivals represent chilling, good moments with friends, good music, good beer, sunny days, and above all a place where it’s possible to meet plenty of people with differents cultures, from differents countries, and that is what builds the global culture.

  1. I think it's a very interesting subject because the festivals are a good interpretation of global culture. In fact, in the festivals, there is a lot of people who comes from different countries and who have different cultures. Everybody share the same passion, the music, so this is the opportunity to meet people, talk and exchange with them. Moreover, the music is a thing which is open to every one and transmits values, emotions or feelings for some people, everybody can listen music: childs, adults, mens, womens..There are many kind of music, so it's difficult to dislike the music.
Every year, a lot of festivals are organized all around the world, for example in Barcelona with the DGTL, in Croatia with the Sonus which are techno music festivals but there are also rock festivals like the Glastonbury in England, or the Fuji Rock in Japan and it's open to everybody !
The festivals can gather the people and i think it's easier to exchange and create links with the others when we have a common interest and the same passion. Consequently, for me, the festivals make it possible to discover other cultures and promote the multiculturality and the global culture.
