WHO RUNS THE WORLD ? PIZZA DOES

Everyone knows pizza, and most of us like it. It became a common dish, and this is thanks to globalization. Furthermore, food is one of the principal way to diffuse culture around the world. That’s why it is important to speak about it when we deal with global culture.

Let’s speak about history. Pizza comes from Napoli, in Italy. It is Italian immigration which started to diffuse pizza around the world, in the late 19th century. Indeed, between 1850 and 1900, about 26 million Italians emigrated. Pizza arrived in the United States in the early 20th century especially in New York and Chicago.
Nowadays, we can eat pizza everywhere in the world, that’s why we can speak about global culture. Indeed, there are now companies which sales these pizzas all over the world, like Pizza Hut. This company shows the concept of globalization because the first Pizza Hut was created in the United States, with an Italian dish. Then, it became an international company. Today there are 30 190 Pizza Hut, in 94 different countries. That’s how pizza became an international dish.
For instance, Americans or even French eat more pizzas then Italians:

It’s possible to say that pizza is a case of culture assimilation. Indeed, it is part of our alimentation, we included it in our life. Moreover, we don’t forget real origins of pizza. For example, the art of the Neapolitan pizza maker who twirls dough in the air is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. It became a symbol of the gastronomic globalization.
However, pizza is also a case of culture appropriation. Indeed, people of each country, culture, or religion adapt it. Now it is possible to find kosher, halal or vegetarian…Little by little pizza seems to lose its cultural origins and it becomes a standard dish.

I hope you enjoyed this reflexion !
