Appropriation for adaptation?

Today I would like to talk to you about a very common phenomenon: The appropriation of culture. But what is that? Susan Scafidi, a law professor at Fordham University, defines it as “taking intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else’s culture without permission.” This can include the “unauthorized use of another culture’s dance, dress, music, language, folklore, cuisine, traditional medicine, religious symbols, etc.”

Indeed, if I come to talk to you about this, it is because it is permanently present around us.
Look, yesterday while updating my Facebook, I came across a picture that caught my eye. So, I use it in this article.

I do not need to give a detailed description of it. It speaks for itself. A foreign person feeling compelled to comply with the codes of society in life.
Today we live in a global world, with a clear border, mutual exchange and accept. So why does this kind of physical appropriation still exist?

You will tell me that we must adapt to the customs, to the lifestyle of the country in which we live... I can understand but how far?

Our physics is our identity, it's the only thing that belongs to us! Changing our habits or our lifestyle to fit is a legitimate thing, but we do not need, we do not need to hide behind makeup for a certain belonging to a certain culture. Indeed, if people pronouncing another culture must necessarily change physically to adapt is simply that she is afraid of the eyes of others, afraid of not being accepted as
she is. The photography perfectly illustrates that. On the reputation of her original appearance she has oozed curiosity and judgment.

So how do we define ourselves as open to global culture if we are unable to remain indifferent to the physique of foreign people? Why people need to appropriate culture to adapate herself at each country?

  1. Hello, thank you for your post, it is very interesting!
First, I like your post and the topic who you are dealing with. I am agree with you, it is difficult for some people to be themselves because, now, our society make pressure and give a model of beauty. Moreover, some people are not made for this model because of their spirit or their morphology and they think they aren’t normal and they will be rejected by society.
Secondly, global culture means accepting everyone as they are. It's not because a person, in his religion or culture, dresses or acts differently, that we should denigrate, reject or mock him. Everyone has the right to do what they want and dress like they want. Indeed, they will always be someone to criticize your way of life, so you mustn’t listen to them and live your life like you want. Like you said in your post, “our physic is our identity”. To put in a nutshell, if we conform to society's expectations and become that model of beauty that it wants us to be, everyone would be the same, without any originality and we would lose what characterizes us.
