For this homework, I have chosen the music «Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) » and I am going to explain this choice.
The artist Shakira is a Colombian/American author and composer mixing at the same time pop music latino and music of the world. Furthermore, she knows how to execute diverses dances resulting from differents cultures such as the oriental dance, the tango etc...
For «Waka Waka», she is accompanied with the South African group «Freshlyground».
This music was selected by the FiFa as the anthem of the world cup 2010 which took place in South Africa.
The World Cup is an international competition of football which takes place every four years. 210 countries and so many differents cultures are in confrontation during the phases of qualification, for 32 qualified at final.
The tune of Waka Waka is resumed by the song «Zangaléwa» which was at the origin an African war song. In this music, we understand that Shakira speaks on behalf all the citizens of the world by explaining that it is the moment to shine, that they are impatient to see the best of the show during this world cup. We can also notice that she says during the music «we are Africa», an other advice that prove again the multi-cultural influence of the music. The language mainly used to interpret this song is English but we can also hear voices in South African as « tsamina mina » …
"Waka waka (This time for Africa)" was sold at 10000 copies and was number 1 in more than 40 countries. It is the title for the World Cup the most sold in the history.
Shakira is moreover with a professional soccer player, Gérard Piqué who plays for the Footbal Club of Barcelona.
I think this music, as well as the artist and the reason why this one was written are in total adequacy with global culture. Cause we can see thanks to various artists who interpret the music, as well as the event for wich this one was interpreted.

Hi, i really enjoy the support you have taken because I love this song and its remind me memories of my childhood. It was original to choose a song.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, it totally represents global culture. First, because, as you said because she was taken as the world cup’s anthem in 2010. I think that music is a really good way to express things and to bring people together, because everyone from different countries in the world know that song.
I also notice that in the clip video we can see footballers form all over the world such as Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and even Zinedine Zidane.
The original name of this song is « This time for Africa » in reference to the place where the world cup occurred, and it’s why she said « we are Africa » in her song like you said. She also spoke in different languages like African, English ans Spanish to make people identified to this song.
For me, football is a sport that can bring people from all around the world together to support their country, because as we can see at every world cup, stadiums are full with people that enjoy football and who wants to share a good moment.
So just like you, I believe that this song represents global culture.
