West Side Story

West Side Story is a 1961 American romantic musical tragedy film directed by Robert Wise  and Jerome Robbins. The film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris, and was photographed by Daniel L. Fapp in Super Panavision 70. Released on October 18, 1961, through United Artists, the film received high praise from critics and viewers.

How does this represent global culture?

There are two gangs , Sharks and Jets , The Sharks belong to the second generation of emigrants from Puerto Rico.The Jets, young people of the white working class1, consider themselves the true Americans born in America.

      In every countries in the world imigrations is a part of discuss and issues . In this movies , we understand that even in the 60's , immigration already exist .

      

      Do you think this is a case of cultural appropriation or cultural assimilation?

      For me that's a cultural apropriation , when emigrants came in U.S , they have been persecuted but they help to build the country , and americans appropriate the ispanic culture for movies or art .

Why did you choose this media? Why does it interest you?

  

      I saw this movie when i was 15 years old , and i was surprise how people just because they came from another  place in the world can be discriminate . And i think the best way to understand it when you are young is to watch a film.

       What does it say about globalization and multiculturality?

      To live with personn from different culture is hard because you have a diferent education , personality , how to think etc ... In this movie the probleme for Jets is that the chief of Sharks loves the sister of the Jets chief . But thats impossible because they lives too differently ? In the 60's , the problemes of imigration is the same as today . There is no more work for everyone , and people thinks emigrants is the problems .
