Higher Brothers 

(海尔兄弟)



Today, we believe rap culture is part of globalization. There are many examples known at the mention, but today we speak of the higher brothers. This is a Chinese hip-hop band that has existed since 2012. These artists knew how to stand out from other Chinese groups by creating something new. Indeed, they chose to export American rap to China. Rather than plagiarizing, the group adapts the references and style of American rap at home.

 Thanks to them, there has been a real boom of rap in China. The principle is simple : import the basics codes of American rap by adding flow and Chinese culture to delirium. The culture of the brands is adapted (exemple: Americans appear in Supreme while the Chinese in Bape). The scope of the music is also a little different. Unlike the United States, China laughs a lot about herself. Higher Brothers mix two types of culture with its music because the lyrics are often self-describing, which gives a mix that is both powerful and comical.


Before the higher brothers, there was no real rap in China because it was considered contrary to national values. We can therefore say that it is because of globalization that this part of the American culture is exported to China. The music that will most resituate this mix of culture is "Made in China" from Higher Brothers, It is a culture shock.

    Hi Louis,
    First of all, thanks for your really interesting article, now i know more about this Chinese group which i only knew by its name before.
    I totally agree with you on the fact that rap music is part of the global culture and influence the whole world as we've seen here in China.
    Rap music has been implanted in almost every European countries and in some of Asian and Latino American countries too ! It's one of the best known musical genres in the world now !
    But if we go further, we can say that music in general is part of the global culture. Wherever humans goes, music follows, and this for centuries.
    What's more, some genres are created thanks to the mix of multiple cultures. For example, the rap had a lot of Jazz, Blues and Rock influence at the beginning which are a mix between American and African culture.
    Finally, i would say that music bring people together in a good way, they create or just listen to song together and i personally think that music is beneficial for the peace in our world and also that music is one of the main way of spreading global culture.
